Justification for changes
22/3/09
Changed dates on plan of action as more information had come to light and documents had taken longer then anticipated completing. For example, drawing up initial designs, I thought I would be finishing them off in the week ending 27 march, but because I hadn’t had time to start them the week before I had to start them in that week. Also I thought that I would have a meeting with my client in the week ending 27 march but that never happened so taking designs and survey to client was delayed a week. Which also pushed back most of the site a week. I also realised my site would take longer then I had previously thought to code so that is also why the final date is 3 weeks later in the second plan of action.
25/5/09
Significant Changes to dates have again happened as I have realised that the ones that were included in the plan of action on 22 March will not be achievable and have already passed for some of them. The 26 June is now the end date as I have realised that the coding will take longer then I anticipated. At this point I have still not got back my survey results which I had expected back earlier. As a result of this the dates for everything have had to be put back a while as the survey impacts the key factors, and what I decide to prioritise in my project.
29/7/09
Changed the border on the website from a solid white border to one that fades from a light grey to black. Reason for doing this is I had initially stated to the client I was going to make the border look similar to this, with rounded edges and such. Another reason for this is I feel it looks better and makes the site look more professional overall.
6/8/09
Changed dates again as they were unrealistic.
Completion date is now 11 September, with site being uploaded a week later on the 18th. This change has arisen from me taking longer then expected to do things, as holidays have come and other projects have impeded on the time I spend on this project. Also the school production in the first week of term meant that I didn’t have much time that week to work on it. Exams are coming up so I have included time for that, as I expect I wont be doing much work during this time.
Problem
This is just an update on the site as it is to date. I have found that the CSS i am using, although fully complient with web standards, is very current and will therefore not show up on older browsers such as IE7 and Firefox 2. The problem is the border i have implemented doesn't show and the page then just looks very bland and outdated. Also the font Calabri doesn't seem to show on a few computers, will need to think of a fallback one.
I am working to fix this and will hopefully have a solution within the week.

Alteration
This is because, what i didn't find out in research was the lack of integration available with an existing site. Minishowcase doesn't easily allow you to put your own page and use their gallery script. You have to use their gallery page which is not what i am looking for.
Lightbox is the next best gallery so i will be using this instead.
Will post progress on how this goes

Survey results
First Question: How long have you been a customer of indisguise?
Most people had been a customer for 6 – 12 months which indicates it hasn’t been a one off and they do come back.
Second Question: Have you been a customer of any other costume hire place in the last 2 years?
No one answered this.
Third Question: On Average how frequently do you hire costumes?
A few times a year was the usual answer, so having the site would benefit these customers as they could see before they came if there was a costume they liked, it could save them time if they planned on buying one too.
The next few questions asked the customer to rank questions in order of importance. 1 is not important at all and 4 is extremely important.
The answers are averages of the 9 surveys and are rounded to 2dp
Website reliability, so can you always access it?
2.67
Being up to date
3.56
Aesthetics
3.22
Relevant information
3.39
Assurance of product, are you going to get what you see on the site?
3.56
Are the costumes going to be the right size?
3.44
Ease of use
3.28
Awareness of site, so how easy is it to get to, from say Google?
3
The site keeps up to web standards
2.83
Is the site as good as competition websites?
2.67
So important factors that I need to consider when making the website are:
- Website being up to date, so making sure that if news is kept on the site then it must updated regularly and old content must be removed
- Making sure that what you are seeing is what you are going to get. So making sure the pictures used are an accurate representation of the costumes. Also making sure any size indications are relatively accurate so the customer doesn’t have to take the costume back.
- All information is relevant to what the customer is looking for and old content isn’t kept up so links in with the website being up to date. But also making sure that there isn’t too much information available, overwhelming the customer.
research on galleries to use on site
There are a few ways I could display the photos of costumes on my site:
plain html, when thumbnails are clicked just link to another page with that picture on it
javascript, a popular one, plenty of websites use this and it seems to work well as long as they don't have a script blocker running. Will display a mini window with back and forward buttons to go between photos when thumbnails are clicked
AJAX (asynchronous java and xml) this is also a popular option and will output in a similar way to java in terms of when thumbnails are clicked.
Lightbox http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox2/
Very popular, easy to set up script (AJAX) that works on all browsers. Popular as it is so unobtrusive and easy to use and looks clean. Does what I need it to, and there is plenty of support out there for it! Only lacks the ability to go between photos from the enlarged picture.
Minishowcase http://minishowcase.net/
This is a very nice AJAX script that is easy enough to set up and looks professional. Does take a little longer to load but works well and is easy to use for the end user. Does absolutely everything I need it to as well as being very pleasing asthetically.
http://www.zenphoto.org/zenphoto/
zenphoto is a very basic script again, written in ajax. Too simple for my liking as it takes you away from the gallery and its not quick enough to get back to the thumbnails. Simple and easy to use but doesn't have the look and functionality of the other ones.
http://www.couloir.org/js_slideshow/#2
This is a gallery written purely in CSS, it does not have thumbnails though. But it does have picture animations and is rather asthetically pleasing and very lightweight as seems to be the theme.
Cross Browser Multi-Page Photograph Gallery
http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menu/lightbox.html#flower8
This is a very nice looking gallery thing that is written in CSS and just uses the hover line. This is a very affective implementation, but I think that the pictures don't get big enough and I need to be able to include text below the image, will have to look to see if I can change this, but I am considering this one.
http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/SlightlyThickerBox/#
slightly thickerbox 1.7
This is what I’m looking for in terms of functionality but does no look aesthetically pleasing at all and I don't really have the skill sets required to change this. Also is very slow to load which is not good for the end user, as they don’t like to wait.
What I need from the gallery:
- Ease of use
- Ability to include text above or below the picture.
- Overlays the screen, keeps the thumbnails in the background. Reason for this being, it is the easiest way to get back to gallery.
- Has to look aesthetically pleasing / Professional
- Has to be able to have back / forward function between images
The gallery I will try first is minishowcase and based on how easy that is to use and if I can get it set up right, I will try lightbox. Minishowcase is the only one that does everything I want it to and looks the part, lightbox comes close but lacks the ability to go between photos from the enlarged picture.
The copy with screenshots is included in my visual diary

Gallery Page
These are two pictures of the gallery page as this will be the page that varies the most in terms of design from the home page.
What is drawn is the content inside the "main" section of the page.
The first picture is what the page will look like when you first go onto it and the second picture is what the page will look like when a thumbnail is clicked on.

Research results
Functions: Most of the sites didn't offer any kind of ordering system. Some of the ones that did used the same system that I have been asked to use, that is ordering over the phone. The other ones that offered completely online ordering were much larger and not appropriate for the size of this business. The lack of completely online ordering systems seemed to indicated people like a bit more human interaction when ordering costumes so calling over the phone should work well if executed right.
Relevance: A major problem with some of the costume hire sites, is the lack of updating that is happening, asthetically and content wise. If a site is out of date the user picks up on it quickly and as a result is offputting, making it less likely for them to order a costume from that company. The sites that were obviously current sometimes changed their page depending what holiday or event was coming up that people would hire costumes for. Eg St patricks day or halloween or something like that. I will talk to indisguise if they would consider doing something like that.
Content:The sites that were the most useful were the ones that had information that was relevant to what the user is looking for, ie costume prices, sizing, and where to pick them up from. Quite a few of the less maintained ones didn't have any information about what sizes were available and how much they were. The most useful sites also had an FAQ section which I will include in the indisguise site. I will also include all the information I can about costume hire and not ramble on about non-relavent information. Some sites gave a long history to the company on the front page which is really not inviting at all and can be offputting.
Asthetics: The most well presented sites were the ones that had lots of pictures, especially on the front page and used the same theme throughout. There were some sites that had no pictures apart from on the gallery, and they were pretty sad as well. Some sites had pictures of the costumes when they are on people at events and they looked really effective. This is a very good idea that I plan to use as it also gives the user a better idea of what the costumes look like in the real world on normal people. I found the easier to use sites had a link bar at the top, and it also looks cleaner too so I will adopt that for my site.
Quality: A few sites were obviously poorly maintaned as there were broken links to crucial pages and missing pictures. This is really offputting, as there was one site where this was the case, that also had an online ordering system. This puts doubts into my mind as i'm sure others as to how secure this service is, if the people can't even build a site properly. I will make sure that my site is rock solid in this respect so people have the upmost confidence in the company.

Meeting
i showed her what i had done in terms of brief and plan of action and when i planned to have the website done by.
I discussed giving out a survey and she was fine with that, i will get that out to her in the next few days. I will collect the survey in 2 weeks and collect the results and use them to write a final brief from.
here is the brief as it stands now:
Brief for website of the costume hire shop Indisguise.
(13-03-09)
Issue:
Indisguise is a costume hire company that wishes to expand to selling costumes online. They have a website already but this does not show what costumes are available for sale and is not aesthetically pleasing. The owner wishes to change this in a bid to boost costume sales and raise awareness of the business.
Purpose:
The purpose of this website is to sell costumes to customers, through effectively showing them what is on offer to increase sales. This is to be done in a very easy to use and aesthetically pleasing way to encourage repeat business.
Audience:
The intended audience of the site will be costumers, potential and regular. Also competition and members of the public who want to contact the owner for whatever reason
Text Formatting:
The text will be formatted in the following way,
The heading will be size 14pt and will be the colour black and in the font Veranda
The body text will be the size 10pt and will also be the colour black in in Veranda
Graphics to be included in the website include:
The indisguise logo
Pictures of costumes for hire, initially about 80 but in time will grow
border around each page, which will be of curtain / drape design
Content to be included in the site:
introduction to the costume company, stating what the site is for and giving a greeting
information on how to buy costumes and where to pick them up from / how much shipping will be
pictures / descriptions for each costume
theme ideas for costumes
information about hiring out costumes, also telling them this can only be done in house, you cannot do it online
contact information
Page Layout
The page layout will be included in a separate document
Constraints:
The website has to load relatively quickly, even on a 56k connection
the website must be fully functional with no dead links
the website must be easy to navigate and understand
the content must be current
the site must be consistent throughout in terms of colour schemes, so it looks professional and like it is regularly updated.
Completion Date:
The planned completion date of the site is the week of the 8th of May, will update this as necessary
Sunday, March 15, 2009
Brief
I plan to update this as new information comes to light, and will make a record as such in my visual diary

Meeting
Went well and i have confirmed that i am ifact doing it with the costume hire place "indisguise."
I am going to meet with my company every two weeks to discuss progress and they are also going to monitor my progress on this blog.
In the meeting we discussed the questions mentioned earlier on. The main points are i don't need to do any forms on the website and i can use all the images that she has.
She doesn't want to hire out from the website; just sell costumes.
I will write up a brief shortly and will post it when done

Initial Questions / Plan Of action

-After meeting Draw Up brief and send that to the company after checking it with Mr Olsen for approval
-After Brief has been done, initial designs for site can be made and details such as colour schemes and fonts will be discussed
-Bring foward 3 Designs for company and see which one they choose
-Start making website and planning how the code will work with structure diagrams and such
-Test the code on webserver at home and see how the order process will work
-Show company progress and give them regular updates on how i am doing
-Do RC1 website and see if the company likes it
-After RC1 iron out bugs and make changes as required
-Publish final website and hand over to company. Show the people required how to maintain the site and give contact details for support on it
